I have been trying lots of different antenna designs. The simplest and
smallest one I have built to date is a bicircle.
http://www.burrowes.org/WiKarekare/Antenna/bicircle.html
It is 120mm square and 15mm deep. I get 14DBi gain and it has quite a
wide beam. At 2.5Km, talking to a 19DBi slotted waveguide, I can turn
it almost at right angles to the signal.
I have varied the circles height off of the reflector from 15mm to 31mm
and had no apreciable change in the gain. The thing that did affect the
gain was the distance between the two wires between the connector and
the circles. This is supposed to be 50 ohm coax, but I didn't have any
and two wires seems to have worked just as well. Mine taper from 6mm to
4.5mm.
To get a circle, I bent the wires (123mm long) around a piece of 40mm
diametre pipe
